Endobronchial Ultrasound

Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) technique had been reported in literature in the year 2002. Presently it is a very popular technique which has been widely employed and has replaced the traditional invasive procedures used for staging of lung cancer. EBUS utilizes a transducer that produces and receive sound waves which are integrated by a processor, to finally generate a 2-D ultrasound image of the site being visualized. Based on the position of the transducer and angle of the ultrasound images that are to be obtained, two type of ultrasound probes are available, namely, radial and linear probes. Endobronchial EBUS is effectively used in mediastinal staging of lung cancer, evaluation of suspicious mediastinal adenopathy, and diagnosing sarcoid and many other related conditions.
